With its emphasis on the wild forces of nature, this 17th century landscape by Francisque Millet (pronounced “frahn-seesk Mee-lay”) has much in common with landscapes painted nearly two hundred years later by Jean-Francois Millet (pronounced “zhahn frahn-swahz mee-lay”). It dramatically portrays a vast, imposing environment that is unspeakably beautiful, but is even more uncontrollable. The tiny figures in the foreground illustrate the helplessness of mankind to overcome the forces of nature all around us.
It whispers to us of the words we hear from God when he responds to Job’s complaints:
“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements--surely you know!”*
When we stand before the awesome majesty of God, we have no power, no recourse, no means of securing our own safety. And this is the God into whose world we go today, as defenseless as sparrows in a storm.

But our dilemma is also our hope. Because it is not our imperfect, fallible selves who control our destiny, but this vast and powerful God, this God who is infinite and unconquerable, and irrefutably worthy of our trust. Our security in the world is He who “laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy.”*
So go now in peace into the world, created as a heavenly being, and shout for joy!
