Gerard David: The Wedding at Cana

©2002 by Jeff Dugan

Isn’t it amusing how the medieval European artists painted Biblical scenes with such obviously European buildings, and clothes, and even European people?  Looks like a beautiful banquet, but of course we know now that the wedding at Cana looked nothing like this.

But the joke’s on us – because it may just be that these artists knew exactly what they were doing, and painted the scenes this way to make them more relevant to medieval Europeans, and not just a story about somebody long ago and far, far away.

When you think about it, that’s part of the reason God came to earth as a human in the first place: to show us a super-human love in terms that make sense to humans.

And it’s also part of the reason we gather here today: to hear a story about long ago and far away, and discover a superhuman love that is still real today.  Still relevant, still personal, and still alive.

Come to the table! Join us in celebration at the banquet for first century Jews, for medieval Europeans, for me and for you, and for now and evermore!
