Holland’s “Golden Age” was the time when a tulip bulb cost as much as a house, when the Dutch ruled the seas, and when the Dutch masters painted their masterpieces. During this period, these masters fashioned two new genres of painting: the wide, open landscape dominated by sky, and the intimate interior.
This was a very religious culture, and it is possible to see these two types of paintings as expressions of faith: in the interiors, we see an expression of the quiet, personal relationship we have with God in our hearts; in the big-sky landscapes an evocation of the expanded life of freedom and infinite hope that results from that relationship.
This is a third theme introduced by the Dutch masters; the courtyard scene. Here the artist is able to simultaneously express the inner joy and comfort of the intimate interior scene, as well as the infinite heights to which the Holy Spirit can lift our souls. It takes a great artist to conceive such an innovation. It takes an infinitely greater God to achieve the truths it communicates
Today we encounter that God. We invite Him into our midst in intimate communion – we praise Him for the flights of ecstasy that that communion can bring.
